The Lightning sailboat was designed in 1938 by Sparkman & Stephens at the request of John and George Barnes of the Skaneateles Boat Company in New York. It was built to be a fast, affordable, and durable one-design racer that could also serve as a family day-sailer, with the first boat launched on Skaneateles Lake in October 1938. I have only recently discovered them through a friend, and am now obsessed with painting their delicate forms as they skim along Skaneateles and Cazenovia Lakes.
